I wrote Moon Bear while working on my Master’s degree in Holistic Science at Schumacher College. It was written during a three-week course on development issues with Vandana Shiva. I think this story came out of a desire to address the issues of environmental degradation on a deeper level. The teachings and discussions were all intellectual, and I felt that if I wanted to truly reach people and encourage them to change their actions I had to engage not just the head, but the heart too. Stories are one of the most effective ways to touch the heart. What we need to address climate change / global warming is not more facts and figures, what we need is the resolve of the heart – knowing without a doubt that we have the knowledge in our hearts to be the one that is part of the One.
